What Is a P/E Ratio (and Why Does It Matter)?

The Price-to-Earnings ratio (P/E ratio) is one of the most commonly used metrics to value a stock. It tells you how much investors are willing to pay for every $1 of a company's earnings.

Formula: P/E Ratio = Stock Price ÷ Earnings Per Share (EPS)

A P/E of 20 means investors are paying $20 for every $1 the company earns per year. A high P/E can mean the market expects strong future growth — or that the stock is overvalued. A low P/E might mean the stock is cheap — or that growth is slowing.
